Fitzpatrick scale: communicating across skin types
The Fitzpatrick scale (Types I–VI) is commonly used to describe how different skin tones respond to UV exposure. For science-forward education, it helps frame tone modulation and photoprotection discussions across diverse skin types.
Type I
Very fair skin; always burns; rarely tans.
Type II
Fair skin; usually burns; tans minimally.
Type III
Medium skin; sometimes mild burn; tans uniformly.
Type IV
Olive/light brown skin; rarely burns; tans easily.
Type V
Brown skin; very rarely burns; tans very easily.
Type VI
Deeply pigmented skin; does not burn; deeply pigmented.
Communication guidance
- Use inclusive imagery and language across Types I–VI.
- Discuss photoprotection as a biological pathway (melanin + oxidative-cycle disruption) rather than a labeled SPF claim.
- Encourage standard sun-safety practices while presenting the science.
